Bentayga and EWB: understand seating, space and everyday use

What the Extended Wheelbase changes, how to assess passenger access, and a practical packing exercise for understanding Bentley’s SUV.

The Bentayga puts Bentley's cabin materials and visual identity into an SUV body. That changes the discussion: the interesting questions include how people enter, what passes through the luggage opening and whether a particular seating arrangement suits a particular journey. The badge alone answers none of them.

There are two important branches to recognise: the Bentayga and the Bentayga Extended Wheelbase, usually shortened to EWB. Bentley introduced the EWB in 2022 with a 180 mm increase in wheelbase and an emphasis on rear accommodation. Wheelbase measures the distance between the axles; extra wheelbase does not mean an equal increase in luggage length.

EWB is a passenger question first

The EWB's rear-seat emphasis is a reason to study the back of the cabin, not to assume every long-wheelbase example has identical equipment. Bentley's launch material describes an available Airline Seat Specification with 22-way adjustment. Availability of a feature is different from evidence that a particular vehicle has it.

Ask what the regular rear passenger actually does. Someone who wants an upright seat and easy access may assess the cabin differently from someone interested in reclining during a chauffeured journey. Start from those actions, then identify which controls and adjustments the specific car provides.

Three measurements a brochure cannot make for you

First, measure the object you transport most often: a folded pushchair, a mobility aid, a dog crate or your actual suitcases. Include handles and protrusions. Second, measure the luggage opening rather than just the space behind it. Third, look at the effort of lifting that load over the sill. These are separate constraints; a single litres figure combines none of them adequately.

For an illustrative packing exercise, imagine a rigid case 75 cm long, 50 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Turning it on its side changes the opening it needs but not its volume. Now add a second case and ask which one must come out to reach a small overnight bag. Those invented dimensions are a method demonstration, not a Bentayga luggage-fit claim.

Child restraints must be used according to the vehicle and restraint instructions. If fit is uncertain, have it checked by an appropriately qualified service.

Compare the right kind of convenience

A high seating position can make the view more appealing while making the step into the cabin harder for a particular passenger. Try access while safely parked, wearing ordinary footwear, and allow the person to move at their own pace. Avoid coaching them into declaring it comfortable.

Likewise, evaluate the loading process at the place it will happen. A broad driveway permits a different movement from a tight underground parking bay. Note where another person can stand without being trapped between a door and a wall.

Where the powertrain fits

For a hybrid example, add the charging connection, cable storage and overnight routine to the same practical plan. For any version, use its own handbook for operating limits and its own build information for fitted equipment. A current range page is a starting point for learning the family, not a specification certificate for an older car.

The Bentayga becomes easier to understand when each feature has a job. Rear-seat adjustment serves a passenger; luggage space serves a load; cameras assist a manoeuvre. Studying those relationships gives you a fuller appreciation of the SUV than treating practicality as an automatic consequence of its shape.
